Ankerside Shopping Centre team to take on Three Peaks challenge

Ankerside Shopping Centre team to take on Three Peaks challenge

Hiking heroes are raising money for cancer charity

A heroic group of friends and team members from Ankerside will be swapping the flat surfaces of the shopping centre for the dizzy heights of the UK’s three highest peaks later this year to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

On Monday 8 until Wednesday 10 October, the eight-strong team will take on the National Three Peaks Challenge, which will see them tackle Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in Cumbria and finally, Mount Snowdon in Wales.

The team - which is being led by Ankerside’s operations manager, Chris Bates – has been in training since last October and have successfully scaled Snowdon an impressive seven times, spent three occasions at the top of Scafell Pike and conquered the mighty Ben Nevis once.

To keep themselves active during the colder months and periods of bad weather, the group also climbed Wales’ Pen y Fan, battled the Kinder Scout and Mam Tor walks in the Peak District, and motored through the Malvern Hills.

The adventurers have been collecting donations at Ankerside over the last 10 months and have so far raised more than £1,000 of its £2,500 target for Macmillan Cancer Support. Chris explained that the charity was chosen as it is close to the team’s heart, with each member affected by the disease either personally or through a loved one’s experience.

“This has been a brilliant challenge to take part in and we have been loving every minute of the preparations,” said Chris. “Training has been gruelling at times. There have been occasions when trying to remain upright on broken rocks covered in snow and ice, with biting winds and sub-zero temperatures really tested our mettle, but that is nothing compared to what people face every day with cancer.

“Macmillan is an amazing organisation, and this is our way of saying ‘thank you’ for all the care and support they have given to our families. By raising as much money as possible, its services will be available to so many others.”

Chris continued: “We are incredibly appreciative for the generous donations from Ankerside shoppers to date and the sponsorship we’ve received individually, but we hope the people of Tamworth will be able to please show their support by contributing a little extra.”

Mark Burbridge, centre manager at Ankerside, is full of praise for the Herculean effort. “To say that we’re all very proud of the team is an understatement. Whatever the weather – freezing conditions or blistering heat - they have all shown their unflinching dedication to the cause.

“There’s a couple of months left until the main event, so it’d be wonderful if the community can come together and boost the funds even further. We wish Chris and the team the very best of luck for October.”
